"Changing the PlayStation is illegal"

Change the PlayStation to be able to use non-original games is illegal.
This was a ruling, No 1243, issued by the Fourth Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation.
According to the Cassation games for the PlayStation are to be considered "property" and therefore are protected by copyright law. Change the PlayStation in order to circumvent the protections in order to use non-original games is therefore an illegal act.
The case concerned a farmer in the province of Trento selling mod-chips to change the PlayStation. The man was convicted at first instance and acquitted on appeal. The defenders of the man have argued that the chips sold were not intended to alter the protections of the PlayStation, but to "expand the possibilities, perfectly legitimate, the Ps2, and that video games are software and PlayStation is a computer.
For the PlayStation Cassation instead is an "automatic data processing", a "game consoles, and video games are" original works complex and multimedia. "
The Cassation has rejected the appeal condemning the man to pay the court costs and compensation of 2,500 euros to be paid to Sony.
