Nearly 70% of Italian families own the home they live in

According to data released by ISTAT, and referring to 2008, 16.9 million Italian families (representing 68.5% of Italian families) are the owners of the house they live in, 4.7 million households living in rent (18.9%), and 3.1 million (12.6%) have beneficial interest in the home or at no charge. 13.4% of families are burdened by owning a home mortgage.
By comparing the Italian situation with the rest of Europe it is noted that the number of households living in rent is well below the European average. 18.9% in Italy against average of 24.3% in the European Union (EU27) and 28.9% in the euro area countries (EU15).
Italian families live mostly in apartment (54.9%), while 38.1% of families live in villas, bungalows or single-family houses or apartment (with separate entrances).
