Record unemployment in Europe in July

According to a report by Eurostat, the unemployment rate in the euro area (EU-16) in July stood at 9.5%, up from 9.4% in June, and up from 5.7% in July 2008. The unemployment rate in EU countries (EU-27) in July stood at 9% vs. 8% to 9 June and 7% in July 2008.
Eurostat estimates that 21 million 794 thousand persons in the 27 EU countries and 15 million in the euro area countries were unemployed in July. Compared with the data of June there was an increase of 225,000 unemployed in the EU countries and 167,000 in the euro area countries. Compared with July of last year the number of unemployed increased by 5 million 111 thousand in EU countries and 3 million 264 thousand in the euro area countries.
The countries with the lowest unemployment rates were the Netherlands (3.4%), Austria (4.4%) and Cyprus (5.5%). The countries with the highest unemployment rate were Spain (18.5%) followed by Latvia (17.4%) and Lithuania (16.7%).
As regards Italy, the unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2009 stood at 7.4% compared to 6.8% in July 2008. In France, the unemployment rate in July this year was found to be 9.8% compared to 7.8% in July 2008, in Germany the unemployment rate reached 7.7% against 2.7% in July 2008, the rate in Great Britain Unemployment reached 7.7% against 5.7% in July 2008.
