U.S., 45 million poor

The economic crisis continues to affect heavily the U.S., according to the latest census results (for the year 2009) that were anticipated by the Associated Press the U.S. poverty rate has risen sharply.
Out of a population of 307 million people as many as 45 million, or approximately 15% of the population (that one American in seven) live below the poverty line.
The poverty rate in 2009 rose 1 .8% from the previous 13.2% in 2008. This is the highest annual increase since 1959, since when we began to collect these data. To find an annual increase so high we must go back to 1980 during the energy crisis.
The historical record of the poverty rate was equal to 22.4% in 1959, the first year that the U.S. government began tracking poverty. The record low was 11 .1% in 1973 after then-President Johnson launched the War on Poverty, but since then has fluctuated in the range 12-14%.
In 2008 the federal government set the poverty threshold at $ 22,025 (approximately € 17 000) annually for a family of four, and $ 10,830 per capita.
Among the working age population, 18-64 years, we expect a poverty rate of 12.4%. The child poverty rate should rise from 19% in 2008 to more than 20% in 2009.
